2007 Winner - Malcolm GloverMalcolm Glover has an MA in Photography from the Royal College of Art and a Diploma in Documentary Photography from Newport, South Wales. He has exhibited extensively throughout the UK since 1987 and has produced a large number of commissions for various organisations. He has been employed as a tutor and lecturer and has worked for newspapers, publishers, advertising agencies and banks. His residency was based at the Gerry Bennett Ward at Mile End Hospital in London which provides care and treatment for older people experiencing both physical and mental health problems. Malcolm encouraged the patients to take photographs of each other during weekly workshops on the ward. "It has had a very positive effect on the inpatient experience as it appears to improve mood, social interaction and motivation, " reported Occupational Therapist, Spies Wilmie, at the end of the project. "It seems also to improve staff and patient relations as they interact on a different level with the patients, not performing a task or procedure but socialising. It also facilitates focus, attention and memory which are important to maintain at their stage in life. Hospital stays can be really lonely and depressing and it is truly great to see projects like this materialising and making a difference in someone's life." Malcolm's final piece for the hospital was a montage photograph of Columbia Flower Market at Mile End which many of the residents in the hospital strongly identified with. He composed a further montage photograph of a nearby street for his commission for Paintings in Hospitals.
